Review: Sandwich
Author: Catherine Newman
Sandwich follows Rocky, a woman in her mid-50s who goes on the annual family vacation to Cape Cod with her husband, their two grown kids, and her ageing parents. The title comes from Rocky being “sandwiched” between caring for adult children on one side and increasingly vulnerable parents on the other - all while trying to hold onto her own identity, aging body, and sense of humour.
Sadly, I did not connect as much as I had hoped with this book, however, there were definitely a few gems tucked inside. The family dynamics felt relatable at times, and I appreciated the honest moments about aging, caregiving, and the chaos of being “sandwiched” between generations. Newman has a great way of capturing small, tender observations that made me pause.
